Dear respected Muslim,
Asalaamu Aliakum Warahmatullahi wa barakatuhu.

I would like discuss with you a topic that will be significantly lengthy so I ask you to bear with me. The question title is student loans with riba but there is also some other issues I will address as well.

I am a student in my 3rd and final year at university in the United Kingdom. In recent times, I have trying to immerse myself again into the Deen of Allah (Subhana wa’ ta’ala) from a lengthy time of contemplation and neglect. I have also been striving to remove things from my life that go against Allah (Subhana wa ta’ala) and Muhammad (Sallallahu alaihi wasallam). One of the things I have not been mindful of are the student loans (which you are probably maybe aware of if you are from the UK) that I have been taking out for the last four years to finance my studies. I am in a very difficult predicament and I’m not blaming ignorance as I should have known better, but I am adamant in seeking Allah’s mercy and forgiveness from involving myself with riba, though salah and reading the Qur’an as much as I can.
Should I give up my studies even though I’ve come so far? Should I payback the loans with or without the interest, or a suggestive alternative? Can you provide me with a scholarly answer on this issue please?
However, asI have been immersing myself in Islam again, I have gained, through the guidance of Allah (Subhana wa ta’ala), this newly acquired love for Islam and the Prophet Muhammad (Sallallahu alaihi wasallam) and for Allah (Subhana wa ta’aala). I’ve been researching on many Islamic schools in my area and now I have the desire to learn more about my Deen which I can acquire from respected and well learned Muslim scholars. The course starts next year in January. I have contemplated leaving my current studies to join this better and far more rewarding one instead.
Should I take this option, even with the behest of my parents and those around me, not to mention the time an effort to get to this point?
I would really appreciate your input on these matters.

Jazakallah Khair,

Bilaluddin
