Salam Walaykum. I know this might seem like an unorthodox question but I need an answer from an Imam because my dad refuses to listen to me when I say that streaming and playing online games as a job isn’t gambling. Famous streamers like Richard Tyler “Ninja” Blevins and Michael “shroud” Grzesiek are famous streamers which means they literally play video games for a living. Now I don’t want to be anything like them because I am not good enough at these games, I just want my dad to understand that what they are doing isn’t gambling. What they do is basically a full-time job. Richard Tyler “Ninja” Blevins and Michael “shroud” Grzesiek have been offered contracts to stream on famous websites like YouTube, Mixer and even Twitch because these websites make more money when they have thousands of viewers on their website and in order to get these viewers on their website, they need to attract famous streamers on their website because the streamers are the ones bringing in views and they do this by offering contracts to these streamers that pay some where between $550,000 – $1,000,000+ per year. Now my dad thinks anything that involves video games and money is gambling which is obviously wrong, these 2 streamers get paid a lot just because they are famous and they provide value towards their streaming platform. I have told my dad to think of it like playing in the NBA or in a Football league and getting paid to do so. I have even used the name of Allah Subhana Wa Ta’ala in telling him that these 2 streamers playing these games are never gambling, they are simply playing to entertain the viewers watching them, receive salary from their streaming platform, and to help their streaming platform make money. My dad is reaching his 70’s which is why he refuses to understand and believe me when I say this isn’t gambling and he insists and answer from an Imam to verify what I am saying, so please help him understand. That is all I ask. Thank you.
