Today (3rd October, 2014) marks one of the most significant days of the Muslim Year – The Day of ‘Arafah. The 9th Day of the Month of Hajj is when the pilgrims assemble on the plain of ‘Arafah to complete one of the essential rituals of the Hajj. Its is a powerful, dedicated day of prayer and repentance for the entire Muslim World and is especially heart rendering for those Pilgrims able to climb the Mountain of Mercy where the Prophet (SAW) gave his last Sermon. Each pilgrim make a concious effort to stand in vigil on the Plain of Arafat all day, deeply engrossed in private prayer.
The virtues of this day extend beyond just the Pilgrims to the enitre Muslim Community as it also marks the eve of Eid-al-Adha or the Day of Sacrifice. Whilst the Pilgrims stand in vigil , arms raised in supplication and eyes wet with tears of repentance, the rest of the Muslim Community preapres itself for a day of celebration and sacrifice on the 10th day of Hajj.
The day of Eid-al-Adha follows the traditions and teachings of Abraham who was ordered by his Lord to sacrifice his son as a show of faith. When his Lord was pleased with him, Abraham was ordered to sacrifice a small animal instead and this traiditon has been followed by Muslims ever since.
The Muslim community makes a sincere effort to give ‘Qurbani’ or Sacrifce in the form of money and food to those who need it most as a sign of charity and togetherness. With the amount of uncertainity, poverty and violence that is occuring in today’s world, the timing and significance of this Day can not be understated. The Muslim Community continues to show that those who administer violence and oppression under the guise of Islam do not represent them. In reality, the Day of Eid reinforces the notion that Muslims are always thinking of those less fortunate and are able to unite in goodness and charity at the most difficult of times.
We here at Imams Online would like to extend our warmest greetings to the entire Muslim World on this special occassion as we say Eid Mubarak! We pray that the Muslim Community continues to stay united and continues to showcase the beauty and true essence of Islam.
