The horrific attack at a park in Reading on Saturday 20 June has been declared a terrorist incident. Our thoughts are with the families of all those who have lost their lives or have been injured.
Imam Qari Asim said:
“In light of the exceptional uncertainty created by Covid-19 pandemic and recent global events, this terrorist attack has caused considerable concern in communities. Lone attackers remain a serious threat to us all and we must remain vigilant.
There can never be any excuse for hate crime and any terrorist must face the full force of law.
As the perpetrator of this appaling attack was an asylum seeker, some people will exploit this tragic incident to use demonising rhetoric towards asylum seekers and show their resentment towards them.
To defeat the virus of extremism, and build a more cohesive society, we need communities to stand
together and robustly challenge those who wish to create division, suspicion and fear.”
