“The fact that Boko Haram have killed Muslims in the holy month of Ramadan inside a mosque, once again proves that the perverted extremists are as much against Muslims as any other community. They have no regard for God, religion or humanity”
Imam Qari Muhammad Asim
Imam Qari Muhammad Asim of Makkah Mosque in Leeds speaks of his outrage at news of a Boko Haram attack on Muslims whilst they prayed in Mosques.
Boko Haram extremists gunned down nearly 100 Muslims praying in mosques in a northeast Nigerian town according to official government figures.
The people of the town were in several mosques, praying ahead of breaking their daylong fast, when the extremists attacked. They killed 97 people, mainly men. It has also been reported that the militants broke into people’s homes, killing women and children as they prepared the evening meal.
Nigeria’s homegrown extremist group often defiles mosques where it believes Imams are espousing too ‘moderate’ a form of Islam. Some of those killed in attacks in the past month had only just returned to rebuild towns and villages recaptured this year from Boko Haram.
Imam Qari Asim reiterates the view held by the majority of Muslims, namely that groups like Boko Haram and ISIS prove time and time again that they do not operate under any Islamic legitimacy. They hold strong to a warped world view and seek to maim any and all those that oppose them, be they Muslims or not.
Imam Qari Asim acknowledges the need to be vociferous in speaking out against all forms of terrorism be it ‘Islamic’ or not. We need to stop giving the attackers the air time they crave and instead focus on the victims and their families during these difficult times.
