Mosques in Florida have been central to the relief efforts following the devastation caused by Hurricane Irma as they opened their doors to provide shelter and food for hundreds of people left homeless by the storm.
Some of the main institutions that were first to respond to the Hurricane included the Islamic Centre of Orlando and the Islamic Society of Tampa Bay Area.
A report by the Washington Post interviewed some of those that had been taken in by the Mosque’s and spoke about the hospitality and safety they felt.
The Imam of the Mosque said,
“We wanted people to feel as comfortable as possible and we wanted to do our best and did not want anyone to have any discomfort.”
